Volumetric VR - Bringing VR to a new level

Kurzthese

Volumetric VR - video featuring moving images of real people and then digitized as a 3D asset - is the new upcoming thing in the world of Virtual Reality.
The Berlin-based companies Trotzkind and reallifefilm international share insides of the advantages, technical obstacles and which technologies that can be combined for a realistic experience.

Beschreibung

Up to now, as a user of interactive VR experiences, one generally encounters animated figures in an artificial environment resembling a computer game. The next upcoming thing is the integration of Volumetric VR - people filmed from all directions, then computed as 3D figures and inserted into the virtual environment. A complicated process that currently still needs a lot of data. What is still in development at the moment could be the standard procedure for walk-in VR Experiences in a few years.

The Berlin-based companies Trotzkind and reallifefilm international are working together with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute on a new technology for volumetric video recording. Most recently, they brought a classic German subject into 21st century technologies by developing a Volumetric VR Experience based on Goethe's sorcerer's apprentice. Based on their knowledge and experience, they will share insights into the development of new VR experiences which are created with the help of volumetric camera technology and algorithms. What are the advantages of the new technology, which technical obstacles have to be bridged and which technologies and storytelling features can be combined for a realistic experience?

The Fraunhofer HHI department "Vision & Imaging Technologies", Trotzkind GmbH and reallifefilm international GmbH are part of the joint research project VVOW. VVOW is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
