Augmenting Journalism at The New York Times w/ immersive Storytelling
Alternate reality (AR) is entering the newsroom, since smartphones, thanks to Apple’s and Google’s latest tools, are becoming the ultimate alternate reality devices. This way, developers can easily place virtual objects in physical spaces. Media providers can benefit from this as well and enhance their stories with new perspectives. It is vital to find matching stories and connecting factors for this new technology if it is to serve a greater purpose than a mere brief wow effect. The New York Times has gathered initial experience in this field during the Winter Olympics. How do you tell stories in AR? How do media companies profit from this new technology? What is the production process for AR? How did users experience it, and what observations did they make?
